Homeschool high school students look forward to earning a diploma. Learn to plan a memorable homeschool graduation ceremony for your family or homeschool support group.

A homeschooling graduation finalizes the commencement of homeschool high school and socially prepares a homeschool high school student to begin a course of college studies or enter the workforce.

Meeting Homeschool Requirements

Check with the state Board of Education to learn what the homeschool requirements are for finishing homeschool high school and issuing a homeschool diploma.

Graduation Ceremony

Consider the elements of a traditional graduation ceremony. Pomp and Circumstance by Sir Edward Elgar is the traditional graduation song in the United States. Order or create a homeschool diploma. There are several companies that offer graduation supplies for purchase and some will even custom-create a homeschool diploma and other things, such as a class ring and commemorative picture frames. Families might want to order caps and gowns, have a professional photographer take senior portraits, or order custom-printed announcements or invitations.

If the homeschool support group has several graduates, it is recommended that each family meet several times before the actual graduation ceremony to discuss the logistics. Where will the graduates walk? Who will push the button on the player? Who will be the master of the ceremony? Will anyone else be making a speech? Does the group have specific colors in its logo that can be used as “school colors” so that the tassels and caps and gowns can coordinate? Perhaps each student wants to choose his or her own colors, or tie-dye. A homeschooling graduation can be as formal or carefree as the individuals graduating.

Homeschooling Graduation Preparations

Creating a plan of action is an important step in the coming-of-age that accompanies graduation. In traditional high school, a select few students are asked to give a speech to represent their class; but in a homeschool graduation, each student may address the podium. Preparing a speech can help the student clarify their goals and express gratitude to the adults who have mentored him or her along the way.

Homeschooling Graduation Celebration

Once the official graduation ceremony has ended, consider a rip-roaring graduation party. Providing a safe social forum where graduates can mix with the families and friends that have supported their studies offers plenty of chances for congratulatory handshakes and hugs. During these parties, younger teens begin to look forward to their own graduations. Extended family and friends can dance, play games and eat together. Hiring a disc jockey, a band or dance instructor will ensure lively entertainment. Consider using a caterer or asking guests to bring pot luck dishes. Sharing merriment makes for a memorable experience.

Make Plans For a Homeschool Graduation

Planning a graduation ceremony for teens in homeschool support groups is a great way to memorialize the completion of homeschool requirements and ceremoniously issue a homeschool diploma. Work with your homeschool high school student to draft a plan for a graduation ceremony.
